EA and TerraTherm Launch Thermal Remediation Project at Hastings Ground Water Contamination Superfund Site OU12

GARDNER, MA—(SEPT 2023)—TerraTherm, Inc. (TerraTherm), a Cascade Company and worldwide leader in the development and implementation of in situ thermal remediation of organic contaminants in subsurface source zones, announced that they will commence remediation work under contract to EA Engineering, Science, and Technology, Inc., PBC (EA) at Operable Unit 12 (OU12) at the Second Street Subsite of the Hastings Ground Water Contamination Superfund Site (the Site).

The OU12 site contains soil and groundwater contamination from a former coal gas plant that operated from 1894 to 1931. Historical investigations identified benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene (BTEX), styrene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils and groundwater at the OU12 site.

“We’re excited to partner with EA on this and several other projects for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),” said Jim Galligan, Senior Vice President, TerraTherm. “TerraTherm brings decades of experience in the design and implementation of thermal remediation solutions, and we look forward to achieving the cleanup goals for this Superfund Site.”

The EA/TerraTherm team will deploy high-temperature thermal conduction heating (TCH) and Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE) over an area of approximately 26,000 square feet (approximately 0.6 acres) to a depth greater than 140 feet below ground surface for a ten-month period at the Site. With TCH, TerraTherm will install and operate our proven and reliable TCH heaters from which heat moves out uniformly in the soil. Steam, contaminant vapors, and air are removed from the treatment zone during heating using vapor extraction wells. SEE involves the injection of steam into the treatment zone with accompanying multi-phase extraction to remove contaminated liquids and vapors, and condensed steam and groundwater from the treatment zone.

TerraTherm advises on, designs, builds, and operates thermal remediation projects from concept to closure. The company offers the broadest array of thermal remediation services and technologies in the industry. TerraTherm tailors project designs to specific site conditions, using the optimal combination of thermal treatment technologies.
