ISTD was used to remove PCE released into the subsurface by a former dry cleaner.  Remedial objectives were that no single post-treatment soil sample exceed 5.5 mg/Kg of PCE and the average post-treatment PCE concentration across the site be less than 0.56 mg/Kg.  Over 3,100 lbs of VOCs and another 9,000 lbs of other organic compounds were removed between the pilot and full scale treatments.  All remedial goals were met.

TerraTherm conducted a 6-well "micro-pilot" field demonstration of ISTD treatment at a former industrial chemical landfill.  Contaminants consisted of a wide range of CVOCs, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy-end hydrocarbons present as LNAPLs and DNAPLs, including chlorinated ethyenes/ethanes, chlorinated benzenes and numerous heavy aliphatics.  The pilot test was designed to measure the efficacy of thermal treatment at 100 deg C and 300 deg C treatment temperatures and evaluate materials of construction for the follow-on full-scale design and implementation.  TerraTherm provided heating and effluent treatment equipment, as well as on-site oversight of construction and the 3-month pilot test operation.

ISTD was used to treat an area of 1,288 m2, with a total treatment volume of 11,100 m3.  Approximately 2,350 kg of PCE was removed over a 6-month period, with all project goals met.  The project included thermal treatment next to a church, graveyard and residences.  The site had been the subject of a third-party Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which led to the selection of ISTD over excavation or long-term SVE.  The completed ISTD project took less time, used less energy and cost less than the LCA predicted.

TerraTherm and CH2M Hill.  A combined Steam and ISTD thermal treatment to remediate a large DNAPL source zone at an active AFB.  Total treatment volumen 74,000 cy.  The remedial approach was chosen due to the varying hydrogeology in the treatment zone.  Goal:  remove all of the DNAPL in the treatment zone.  Project completion early 2011.

Under sponsorship of the Japan Ministry of the Environment (MOE), TerraTherm and SheGoTec Japan conducted an In-Pile Thermal Desorption (IPTD) demonstration for treatment of dioxin-contaminated soil.  Achieved remedial goals of less than 1,000 pg-TEQ/g, the environmental standard for soil in Japan, while also meeting all off-gas emission standards.

In partnership with Krüger, ISTD treatment of 8-m deep PCE hot spot located directly adjacent to a poorly constructed building and extending beneath a local fire pond. Treatment zone included a 2 m thick peat layer beneath a shallow water table.  Successful treatment enabled the idyllic pond and the recreational area to be fully restored.

The first application of Thermally Enhanced SVE in the UK, in partnership with Provectus Group.  U.K Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Harwell site formerly licensed for chemical waste disposal. Chalk is heterogeneous fractured rock with relatively low permeability, high porosity. Results: demonstrated that heating significantly boosts removal of VOC contamination compared to conventional SVE.  Team has successfully treated three separate disposal pits.

Former manufacturing facility.  ISTD used with existing dual-phase vapor extraction (DPVE) system to remove CVOCs from the subsurface.  9,300 cy, located within the existing network of DPVE wells.  Results: Pre-treatment soil concentrations reduced by >99.9% within the heated zone and >95% at the depth interval below the treatment zone.
