World’s Largest In Situ Thermal Desorption Project: Challenges and Solutions

TerraTherm and its In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) sublicense holders have cleaned close to 50 sites, but what happens when we are presented with one that is remarkably large with more than 100,000 cubic yards (76,500 m3) of PCE and TCE rich soils to a depth of over 40 feet (12 m)? The site in particular that was presented to TerraTherm was a former aerospace manufacturing facility and had to be remediated in less than a year. Successfully completed by TerraTherm, this site in Teterboro, New Jersey is now the largest ISTD project to date. The redevelopment of this former … Continue reading

Why I Drive a Tesla

Over the past 2 ½ years, TerraTherm employees and visitors alike have commented on the car I park outside the office, a Tesla Model S all-electric sedan.  “How do you like the car?” “Cool car!” and “How’s it do in the winter?” are commonly heard, and I love talking about it, and giving folks rides, since it truly is a wonderful car: fast, agile, great looking, quiet, safe and reliable.  Its 200-mile range, combined with the ever-growing number of Tesla Superchargers nationwide, has enabled me to drive it as far as New York and New Jersey on occasion, and someday … Continue reading

Effective Safety Management of ISTR Sites

There are numerous health and safety challenges that can be found on an In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) site.  From performing health risk assessments for hazardous chemicals to identifying and correcting on-site physical hazards or working with and managing a variety of subcontractors, there is an extensive list of safety and regulatory concerns that need to be addressed. Managing these concerns can often appear to be a daunting task, but with a practical, risk-based safety management approach, ISTR can be performed safely, as well as effectively. At TerraTherm, our strong safety management system begins with a commitment to safe work … Continue reading

TerraTherm’s Continued Growth in 2014: A Year in Review

The application of In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) for treatment of subsurface contaminants continued to grow in 2014. With the emergence of ISTR as a proven source area remediation tool and with the number of projects increasing rapidly worldwide, comes the rumbling of a paradigm shift in the remediation industry. Only 20 years ago, it would have seemed impossible to remediate the types of sites that are currently being treated with ISTR to the same degree that we are now consistently doing. Throughout our nearly 15 years of operation, TerraTherm has been a solution for clients who wish to quickly, … Continue reading

The Road to a Successful Remediation is Paved with Data

Accurate data routinely collected can be the difference between a successfully completed thermal remediation project, and one with extended operations, costing the client money. TerraTherm designs and executes a reliable data collection process during In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) projects that specifically targets key operational data, therefore enhancing system performance, reducing energy consumption, and documenting when project goals are met. Depending on the complexity of a site and the specific remedial objectives, any number of data analyses can be performed, but the quantity and quality of data are paramount. The data are used to create detailed mass and energy balances … Continue reading

In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) Market Trends

Through recent competitive proposals it has become obvious that the ISTR market is trending towards a more competitive, commodity-style product. While TerraTherm often ranks high on quality and approach, there is an obvious need to reduce base pricing in order to stay competitive for the smaller, more straightforward sites. Tier One Pricing Solution: TerraTherm’s history of uninterrupted success provides an impetus for clients (e.g., Federal, State, and Private) to consider TerraTherm’s Tier One solution for ISTR sites. Tier One offers a simpler and more streamlined In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) project delivery approach, focusing on essential project elements and price … Continue reading
