2016 In Review

I’m pleased to provide a brief review of TerraTherm’s progress toward our mission to be the worldwide leader in the development and implementation of thermal remediation of organic contaminant source zones. I am thankful to those customers we had the honor of serving this past year.  Team TerraTherm is  dedicated to earning and keeping our customers’ trust and goodwill, by always endeavoring to fully comprehend and meet their remediation and related business objectives. TerraTherm started the year by adding another international partner, Beijing Enviro-Chem Environmental Technology CO., Ltd (Beijing Enviro-Chem). Beijing Enviro-Chem and TerraTherm are pleased to join forces in … Continue reading

World’s Largest In Situ Thermal Desorption Project: Challenges and Solutions

TerraTherm and its In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) sublicense holders have cleaned close to 50 sites, but what happens when we are presented with one that is remarkably large with more than 100,000 cubic yards (76,500 m3) of PCE and TCE rich soils to a depth of over 40 feet (12 m)? The site in particular that was presented to TerraTherm was a former aerospace manufacturing facility and had to be remediated in less than a year. Successfully completed by TerraTherm, this site in Teterboro, New Jersey is now the largest ISTD project to date. The redevelopment of this former … Continue reading

Moving Environmental Equipment – Logistics Done the Right Way at TerraTherm

A prodigious level of activity, intense excitement, as well as a bit of angst can precede the start of any big project. We’ve recently been experiencing all of that at TerraTherm! We reached the point in the schedule where two of our projects required the treatment equipment to be delivered almost simultaneously. Ten tractor-trailer loads of remediation equipment needed to be moved to our two, separate New England sites in the same month. All told, nearly six million dollars’ worth of equipment had to be staged, loaded, and transported to both locations in a matter of two weeks. One of … Continue reading

Operating at an In Situ Thermal Remediation Site

Seeing a TerraTherm site operate is an extraordinary thing. The view of the stack, faithfully discharging clean water vapor into the air, the metallic chirping of In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) heaters oscillating in their well casings, and the low frequency humming of the treatment equipment truly is a unique experience. The principals of subsurface heating with Thermal Conductive Heating (TCH) are simple, but to actually implement this aggressive source zone treatment technology is another thing altogether. It is impressive to think about how quickly a source area can be treated, when something like 15 years ago, the only other … Continue reading

Preparing your Site for Thermal Remediation

A TerraTherm job is similar to other construction-style jobs in terms of logistics. Once all of the design and contracting issues have been resolved and a date to proceed has been set, it’s finally time to mobilize!  Mobilization is often one of the most overlooked aspects of every construction-type job. Generally, we tend to think that work begins once we arrive on site, forgetting all the hard work that precedes it.  Mobilization is one aspect of every job that can prove greatly beneficial to all involved if planned properly, or alternately, can create future headaches when overlooked.  The transition can … Continue reading

In-Pile Thermal Desorption® (IPTD®) Animation at Danang Airport, Vietnam

In February 2013, the U.S. Agency for International Development awarded a $37M contract to TerraTherm to carry out thermal remediation of dioxin at Vietnam’s Danang Airport. TerraTherm’s remediation technology is playing a vital role in the U.S.-funded project’s efforts to clean up dioxin contamination in areas of Danang airport where herbicides were stored and handled during the U.S.-Vietnam War. USAID is working in close coordination with the Government of Vietnam and other contractors to implement this ongoing project through 2016. USAID selected TerraTherm’s In-Pile Thermal Desorption® (IPTD®) technology for treatment of approximately 73,000 cubic meters (95,000 cubic yards) of soil and sediment … Continue reading

Drilling and Well Installation at In Situ Thermal Desorption (ISTD) Sites

Once all of the modeling, treatability studies, and design work have been completed, it’s on to the next step for TerraTherm and time to mobilize our staff, resources, and equipment to the field to install the thermal wellfield. This is an essential task that must be done precisely in order to ensure thermal success. It does not matter how well the site was modeled or designed; if the installation is not done correctly it can lead to issues with thermal treatment operations and potentially jeopardize the success of the project. Plan of Attack: When the wellfield layout has been finalized, … Continue reading
