2017 In Review
As we leave 2017 behind and begin the new year, it is the perfect time to take a step back from our busy day-to-day operations and look at all that we have accomplished in the past twelve months. 2017 was a busy year for TerraTherm, implementing all 3 of our thermal remediation technologies (Thermal Conduction Heating (TCH), Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH) and Steam Enhanced Extraction (SEE)), including several sites involving combinations of technologies. In 2017, TerraTherm implemented 13 thermal remediation projects in 5 states across the US and 6 projects across 4 international countries. In early 2018, TerraTherm will be … Continue reading

How We Use Hazard Recognition Tools to Help Eliminate Incidents On-Site
No matter where you are, you’ll always hear that saying, “There is no ‘I’ in Safety”. This statement could not be any more true, especially here at TerraTherm. For us, safety is a total “Team” effort, from the top of the management team, to the employees in the field. Safety is paramount for our success in all of our projects, and it shows in our safety record. With zero OSHA recordable incidents or lost days for 2016, TerraTherm was recently awarded the Cascade Environmental, LLC’s (Cascade) Obsidian Award. This award is given to the Cascade business units that achieve no recordable … Continue reading

To Wipe or Not to Wipe: Ensuring Equipment Cleanliness after Decontamination
At TerraTherm, our wellfield and process equipment can take a beating! Between high concentrations of hazardous chemicals, corrosive conditions, and elevated temperatures, piping and equipment generally need a bit of TLC before being put back into circulation for use at another site. When TerraTherm is operating at sites with persistent organic pollutants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) or dioxin/furans, decontamination becomes even more difficult and even more important. Along with typical decontamination procedures such as steam cleaning and pressure washing, washing with a non-ionizing detergent (e.g. Simple Green) is typically necessary. Additional rinsing of equipment with specialized products such as … Continue reading
Achieving Work-Life Balance
I think most of us work to earn money to pay the bills. How much of our time is devoted to this effort? It is reasonable that a comfortable “balance” exists between work and personal life but just what does that mean? To me it means a stress free life. There are certain “jobs” that require our attention around the clock and throughout the calendar (24/7 in hip-speak). A Project Manager’s job at TerraTherm would fall under this category. We must work day and night and always be available in order to ensure the projects run smoothly. There are other … Continue reading

How TerraTherm’s ThinkThermal Website and Data Plotter Connect Clients with Real Time Data
Thermal projects are quick – we often heat and treat a site in less than 6 months. It is crucial to be on top of all the data and know when it is time to stop, or when to collect confirmatory samples to document performance. Every day and week counts, so the project team must have immediate access to the data from the field. As an engineer and data manager for TerraTherm, I have found that two of the most useful tools that I have to help keep our project teams and clients up to date are the ThinkThermal.com website … Continue reading
2015 In Review
2015 was once again a year of continued growth and success for TerraTherm. Over these past twelve months we have experienced a fair share of achievements, milestones and positive changes. To start the year off, TerraTherm was awarded with Environmental Business Journal’s (EBJ) 2014 Gold Medal for Business Achievement in the Mid-size Firm category as well as a Project Merit Award for Remediation. TerraTherm received EBJ’s Gold Medal for increasing revenue nearly threefold from 2011 to 2014. TerraTherm was one of 50 companies honored by EBJ for revenue growth, acquisitions, innovative project designs, technology applications, new practice areas, social contributions … Continue reading

The Process of Hot Soil Sampling and Why it’s Worth the Effort
Do you like to get your hands dirty? For TerraTherm, hot soil sampling is often the defining parameter for the timeline and completion of an In Situ Thermal Remediation project, and for myself, was a great learning experience and an opportunity for me to try something new and exciting. Cleanup of contaminant source zones is what TerraTherm is known for. And those source zones that keep us in business are analyzed through soil sampling. For most project sites, the soil is sampled at various locations before the project begins, sometimes a few times during operations, and one final confirmation round … Continue reading
Why I Drive a Tesla
Over the past 2 ½ years, TerraTherm employees and visitors alike have commented on the car I park outside the office, a Tesla Model S all-electric sedan. “How do you like the car?” “Cool car!” and “How’s it do in the winter?” are commonly heard, and I love talking about it, and giving folks rides, since it truly is a wonderful car: fast, agile, great looking, quiet, safe and reliable. Its 200-mile range, combined with the ever-growing number of Tesla Superchargers nationwide, has enabled me to drive it as far as New York and New Jersey on occasion, and someday … Continue reading

Effective Safety Management of ISTR Sites
There are numerous health and safety challenges that can be found on an In Situ Thermal Remediation (ISTR) site. From performing health risk assessments for hazardous chemicals to identifying and correcting on-site physical hazards or working with and managing a variety of subcontractors, there is an extensive list of safety and regulatory concerns that need to be addressed. Managing these concerns can often appear to be a daunting task, but with a practical, risk-based safety management approach, ISTR can be performed safely, as well as effectively. At TerraTherm, our strong safety management system begins with a commitment to safe work … Continue reading
